About the Instructor:
Karen has been teaching watercolor workshops at Mendocino Art Center, Gualala Arts and her own studio for almost 20 years. She shows her work, watercolors and mixed media at the Artists Cooperative of Mendocino and Cloud 9 Gallery in Fort Bragg. Karen thinks of painting as a practice, supports the idea of painting as a means of expression.
Required Materials:
Use good materials!
Materials sources: Most of the items on the list can be ordered through Cheap Joes: www.cheapjoes.com. or Dick Blick www.DickBlick.com . Locally, there are many supplies at Racines in Fort Bragg.
WATERCOLOR PAPER Required: Natural white Arches cold press, 140 lb. weight, no less. 300lb is ok but more expensive! Have on hand at least 2 full sheets.
PAPER SUPPORT BOARDS Required: Plywood, plexi or Gator boards cut to a slight bit less than your paper size (about ¼” less so that water will not pool at the edges of your paper. (Ex: If you use ½ sheet paper -15x22, your board will be 14.75 x 21.75 . You may want to bring ¼ sheet supports too.
BRUSHES – Flat. All demonstrations will be with flat brushes that hold a clean straight edge. I mostly use 3, 2 and 1” brushes.
Required: 2" wash brush and a 1” flat brush.
Brush Recommendations: Here are some good brushes and sources
Wash brushes – for holding lots of water and paint for luscious bold painting. Winsor Newton Series 965 2” (Amazon) Robert Simmons Skyflow 3” (white sable -RS278 or sienna - RSN278) (Blick)
Flat brushes - for applying thin layers of paint. 1” - Winsor Newton Series #995 1 ½ and or 2” - Richeson Series #9010 or Da Vinci Cosmotop Spin Flat, Series #5080 - size 1040 or 1060
PALETTE AND PAINT Palette: A rectangular palette with good -sized paint wells to accommodate your flat brushes. Recommended: John Pike palette is very durable.
Required: Put your paint in the palette ahead of class time so that paint settles and forms a skin. LEAVE WHITE GOUACHE in the tube. Color placement in palette.. If you can, place your colors in the palette so that all reds, blues and yellow colors are adjacent to each other.
Paint: Recommendation: Graham, Holbein, and Daniel Smith.
