Workshop Description:
Are you curious what a good tea bowl should look and feel like? And learn about the aesthetics and context of these functional art pieces in the art of the tea ceremony or Chado?

This is week-long intensive workshop focuses on hand-building and carving techniques of matcha tea bowls. Participants will delve into the dynamics, traditional forms, texture, and surface treatments. The workshop is a mindful learning experience with a deliberately slow pace. The instructor will also present lectures on tea culture from a practitioner's point of view. Historic and contemporary chawan from the instructor's collection will be shared and discussed for inspiration. Samplings of matcha from different localities will be provided.

Three days of instruction will focus on hollowing, pinching, carving techniques. Ergonomics, balance, seasonality, as well as internal space within the vessel will be discussed. Participants will work on a series of tea bowls and will culminate in firing complete pieces to take home.

About the Instructor:
Encyclopedic rather than serial, his works point to an exchange and reciprocation to the many cultures and spheres he is part of.  Visually and culturally crossing bridges, he negotiates and recognizes the absences in history, and consciously translates and mistranslates systems and forms to create new subjectivities.  Philippine-born, American artist, Cirilo Domine lives and works in Los Angeles.  He received his BA from UCLA (1993) and his MFA from UC Irvine (1996).  He is an artist working in the genres of drawing, installation, and mixed media.  He received a Getty undergraduate grant and interned at the Museum of Jurassic Technology in Venice, CA where he was involved in all aspects of exhibition design.  He is also curator, collaborator and activist and worked for the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center's Advocate Gallery.   He has had one-person exhibitions at Deepriver, Commonwealth and Council and has been included in group shows at M&B Gallery, the MAK Center at the Schindler House, Pinta Dos/Philippine Expressions Gallery, Huntington Botanical Gardens, Plug-In Gallery and  Exit Art. Past projects include:  still.here garment performance at the Palm Springs Art Museum, Pintados Philippine Expressions Gallery, San Pedro, California, MYLT (Me Love You Long Time) at the Aljira Center for the Arts, New Jersey; Sextile at Commonwealth and Council, Men's Work at the Fabric Factory, San Francisco.   He organized  I'm pure i tea, a traditional tea ceremony at the MAK Center's Schindler House where he collaborated with artists Anna Sew Hoy, Michael Queenland, Pato Hebert, Ashley Hunt and others.
