Workshop Description:
Complete beginners and experienced artists will thrive in this class. Students will learn how to design for relief printing, transfer the design to the block, use various types of ink, and create single prints and repeating patterns on paper and fabric. Paper, cards, flour-sack towels, and drawstring pouches will be provided but students are encouraged to bring multiple garments and fabrics to print upon. Tips and techniques for collaging paper prints and securing fabric printed patches to garments will be discussed.

Who This Class is For

Complete beginners without any drawing experience will thrive in this class, but artists with experience in other art mediums will benefit from learning this new artform. Students should feel comfortable working with their hands and viewing details on the stamp/block (bring your reading glasses :-). Sitting and standing, rolling up ink, and applying pressure to the block is required. The ink will stain clothing so students may want to bring an apron. The blade is sharp, therefore there is a small chance of injury for students who forget to cut away from their hand/body. This class is appropriate for ages 12 and up.

Class Overview

Day 1 • Introductions & overview • Examples and types of cuts, tools, and materials • What designs work best (remember to reverse it) • Cutting techniques and practice • Transferring the design to the block ( designs provided) • Carving provided design or your design on your block • Inking and printing on greeting cards and paper • Playing with patterns, letters, and making patches

Day 2 • Bring a design or select from provided designs • Carve another block • Learn about fabric ink and repeating patterns • Fabric printing workshop, tips, techniques and practice

What’s Included

Students will leave the class with two carved blocks and any prints they make in class. Teacher will provide ink, brayers, speedy-carve eraser-style blocks, spoons for rubbing, paper, carbon and tracing paper, pencils, example blocks and premade design options that are easy for a beginner to carve. A handout with instructions, examples, supply lists and resources is also provided.

About the Instructor:
Heather Hogan is a Sacramento artist, professor, and designer who mixes old and new media into vibrant, layered creations. She blends analog collage, digital design, and quirky upcycled finds, often inviting the community to take part in the magic.  Her work plays with themes of place, tenacity, and the evolving roles of women. Lately, she’s been turning public input into bold, place-proud visuals—her art brightens magazine covers, bike trails, highways, and gallery walls across California.  When she’s not creating, she’s leading art workshops and guiding students through web design and modern making at Sacramento City College.
