Class Description

In this abstract mixed media class we will focus on finding our artistic voice by looking at what lights us up and making art that really feels like us-- identifying what we love and what we maybe don't. By doing things one loves, one gets good at saying yes to things and no to things, more often. In order to make strong work, we need to get really good at editing or discerning. If our work is more like us then it will become more valued because it will become more unique and people will desire it because it makes them feel alive, because it is different from them-- something we all crave-- to feel alive.

We will be using acrylic (because it dries faster for learning purposes since we will be painting in layers) on small wood panels, learning various mark making techniques with various tools, including collage, image transfer and stencil. Students will complete 5-6 paintings during the class. The key to strong work is showing differences, focusing on value, design and color. Open to all, beginners and experienced artists.

About the Instructor

Suzanne Lewis began her career as an award-winning art director and graphic designer. She's been a freelance photographer and author, but her main love is abstract painting where she works with acrylic, collage, graphite and all sorts of stencils and tools for mark making. Her work is in collections all over the country and she shows locally at Lansing Street Gallery.

Required Materials (Please bring with you)

  • Bring your collection of acrylic paints. If purchasing new paints, Liquitex “soft body” acrylics that come in squeeze bottles (not Golden’s “fluid” brand which is too transparent) are preferred over heavy body tube paint, but I will show you how to thin tube paint with gloss medium if need be.

  • IMPORTANT: We will be making a wet palette so you will need a cheap café tray, a roll of SCOTT’S BLUE SHOP TOWELS, not regular paper towels and an 11x14 pad of tracing paper (not palette paper).

  • We will be using ACRYLIC GLOSS MEDIUM (not matte medium or Modge Podge) for use as an isolation coat between layers and gluing down collage papers. Bring collage papers, tissue paper, scissors, pencils, water container, various sizes of inexpensive brushes-- rounds and flats up to 3” wide and silicon sculpting shapers or color shapers if you have them.

  • Small 4” foam roller. Mark making tools such as small scraps of bubble wrap, sewing pattern wheel, wooden skewer, awl, color shaper are suggestions.

  • Eight 10”x10” cradled wood panels (NOT canvas) available from Amazon https://a.co/d/20n4Ti5 primed with 2 coats of white GESSO.
