CLASS DESCRIPTION

Relief printmaking has long been a vital method of social criticism and propaganda. Be it reproductive rights for women (in this country), climate change, unending war, our flawed democracy, media chaos, etc., the list of seemingly impenetrable injustice in our era is vast. From addressing broad systemic flaws or to shed light on issues that are more personal in nature, the object of this weekend class is to render your images of protest and injustice into block prints that you can proudly stand behind. We will work on design/layout, carving and printing methods, as well as look back into the history of reactionary art forms.  It has been said that in today’s culture, art cannot alter the course of the world we live in. I’d like to invite you for a weekend in the studio where we can attempt to challenge that perception.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR — Nicholas Collins

I was born and raised in Oakland CA where I was fortunate enough to attend the Berkeley Children’s Art Studio as a child which gave me confidence as an artist and respect for the process of creating. My parents were from England and  I spent much of my youth over there, mostly in Sussex. I studied art history, drawing, and sculpture/studio at UCSB. I trained under master printmakers Kazuko Wantanabe and Emmanuel Montoya at Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, where I did my residency.

I work primarily in reduction linocut which I hand press in limited editions—mostly one-of-a-kind but I also work in intaglio. My work is in private collections in the UK, Germany and across the US.

I teach linocut and woodcut printmaking and art history workshops at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto and at the Mendocino Art Center.
