CLASS DESCRIPTION

This pastel workshop will investigate low-light scenarios like Edward Hopper's “Nighthawks” where illumination from fluorescent bulbs cast a glowing loneliness upon the street outside as diners sit in silence. Other circumstances present the early morning light that penetrates a wooded glade. We will explore these and other settings where sunlight does not evenly color every surface but rather lights edges and creates complicated shadows rich for invention and contrasts. We will work on dark-toned or black paper so that each stroke of pastel promises to chase the light. The class will be satisfying for all levels.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
