WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Holly will take you through the three stages of writing a song: the dreadful first draft, giving and receiving feedback (not criticism!) and turning a good song into a great song. We'll look at where melody comes from, the importance of rhythm, and the magic of rhyme. We'll also address humor, ambiguity, turning sorrow into song, songwriting pitfalls, how to present your song, and copyright and wrong. Prerequisite: you have made up at least one song, to your own tune or set to an old tune.

Folklorist HOLLY TANNEN's satirical songs include "Lily of the Net," "Bonobo Wannabee," "Brownies for Breakfast," "Suburban Shaman" and "The Last Hippie." She has released three CDs, "Between the Worlds," "Rime of the Ancient Matriarch," and "Crazy Laughter." htannen@mcn.org
