17th Annual home & garden tour

Jennifer's Victorian Home

My home, Dilkusha, Palace of Hearts Delight in Persian, was the name of my Grandmother Mary's home in Seoul, Korea. When I was a little girl, I admired this house on visits to Mendocino to see Mary and secretly wished that someday it would be mine.

Wishes do come true. In 1988 I purchased the property and completely remodeled it. It of course has its Victorian look on the outside, but I wanted it to be as much like a loft on the inside with lots of windows and light, and of course lots of room for art!... I wanted it to have a summery feel all year round. The State Park on two sides is my extended garden. It is this view and location that make this spot so special.

Some heather and rockrose survive the wind on the northeast area of my house and potted succulents live happily on my deck on the east side. The birdbath, Buddha fountain and Spirit House bird feeder are a constant source of enjoyment. The south side of the house has a semi-protected area with a mix of flowers that have been planted over the years and hydrangeas, my favorite flower.

I am thrilled to be on the Tour this year, as my Grandmother Mary Linley Taylor, an artist and author, was a founding member of the Mendocino Art Center and the Mendocino Theater Company. I remember when the first plays were in the Art Center Lobby!
